ADVENTURES IN SRI LANKA

Firecrest logo

Wildlife, Temples & Tea

Sri Lanka is a country of contrasts: misty highlands and tropical beaches, sacred temples and wildlife-rich plains. Travelling here allows you to experience ancient history, vibrant food culture and remarkable

biodiversity, all within a relatively short distance. It’s ideal for multi-centre journeys that balance exploration with time to slow down.

Reasons to Visit Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers one of the most rewarding travel experiences in Asia, combining culture, wildlife and landscape in a compact and accessible destination. Ancient cities such as Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa reveal over 2,000 years of history, while hill country rail journeys pass through tea estates and mountain scenery. National parks like Yala and Wilpattu offer opportunities to see elephants, leopards and birdlife, and the coastline provides relaxed beach time and seasonal whale watching.

Food is an integral part of travel here, with regional curries, fresh seafood and spice-driven dishes reflecting the island’s diverse influences. Sri Lanka also lends itself well to multi-centre itineraries and can be combined with destinations such as the Maldives or southern India.

Best for: Culture, wildlife, food-focused travel and scenic rail journeys
Getting there: Direct flights from London to Colombo take approximately 10–11 hours
Entry requirements: UK passport holders require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA); check FCDO guidance before travel

Sri Lanka's Highlights

From the Journal

Exploring Sri Lanka

I had a chance to tour Sri Lanka with Travelsphere as  part of the TTG Sustainable Travel Ambassador Programme. What an amazing country. Firstly the food is wonderful, especially for us vegetarians. Then there's the wildlife, there were so many elephants wandering the lake shore in Minneriya. The big highlight though, was the walk to the top of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress - what a view!

When to visit

December – March

Best for the south and west coasts, including Galle and beach resorts, as well as hill country highlights such as Kandy and Ella. This is also a good time for whale watching off the southern coast.

April – September

The east coast enjoys its driest weather, ideal for beaches around Trincomalee and Pasikudah. Wildlife viewing remains strong, particularly for elephants in Minneriya and Kaudulla during the gathering season.

October – November

Inter-monsoon period with more variable weather across the island. Fewer visitors, lush landscapes and good conditions for cultural travel and photography.

Good for: Year-round travel by region, combining coast, culture and wildlife depending on season.
