Uplifting Communities Through Tourism

with Planeterra

Tourism is a powerful global industry, yet too often the people at the heart of destinations see little or even no benefit. Planeterra works to change this by empowering and supporting community tourism initiatives. Strengthening community tourism not only creates economic opportunities, but also helps protect natural environments and celebrate cultural heritage through meaningful travel experiences.

Our favourite examples include Women with Wheels, challenging cultural norms through professional driver training and Bike With Purpose, a student-led bike tour on Caye Caulker which funds education programmes.

At Firecrest Travel, we’re proud to partner with Planeterra. For every booking made with us, we donate to their work, ensuring that travel has a positive impact on the communities who welcome us.

How Bees Can Save an Elephant

with How Many Elephants & Kiwano Tourism

As farmland expands into ancient elephant corridors in Tanzania, crop destruction has led to growing tension endangering both local people & elephants. But, did you know that bees can stop elephants in their tracks?

A beehive fence in Tanzania has reduced crop raiding by 90%. This innovative project harnesses the power of nature to promote biodiversity, supporting the economic wellbeing and alleviating the elephant-human conflict.

Local women, trained in beekeeping, honey production & sustainable agriculture use the beehives to create income & financial independence fostering peaceful coexistence with elephants.

This September we sponsored a new beehive for the fence.

A Lifelong Home For Elephants In Need

with the Pangea Trust

Over 600 elephants live in captivity in Europe and there is a pressing need for rehoming options, as circuses and zoos move away from keeping them. The Pangea Trust are transforming a thousand-acre site into a reserve for elephants & native wildlife in Portugal. The reserve will become a home where elephants can roam free with their own kind. As the estate is rewilded, native horses & wild Tauros have been released to help develop a more resilient ecosystem. This year we've donated £250 to support rewilding efforts.
