Reasons to Visit The Maldives

The Maldives is a tropical paradise made up of over 1,000 islands, offering pristine beaches, turquoise lagoons, vibrant coral reefs, and a chance to experience local island culture. Beyond luxury resorts, the islands are home to conservation projects, local fisheries, and traditional dhoni boat communities. Whether snorkelling with turtles, exploring remote atolls, or sampling Maldivian cuisine, there’s something for every traveller.

  • Best for: Snorkelling, diving, marine life experiences, and exploring unique local islands. Combine stays on inhabited islands with luxury resort escapes for a varied trip.

  • Getting there: Direct flights from London to Malé take approximately 10 hours. Stopovers are common via Middle Eastern hubs if preferred.

  • Entry Requirements: UK passport holders do not need a visa for stays up to 30 days. Check the FCDO travel advice for up-to-date information.

When to visit

Dry Season: November to April

This is the Maldives’ dry season, with low humidity, minimal rainfall, and calm seas. Visibility for snorkeling and diving is at its best, ideal for spotting turtles, whale sharks, manta rays and vibrant coral reefs. Sea conditions are generally calm, making boat transfers and cruises smoother.

Wet Season: May to October

The wet season coincides with the southwest monsoon, bringing higher humidity, occasional heavy showers, and stronger winds. Sea conditions can be choppier, and underwater visibility may be reduced. Short, intense rain showers are common, often followed by sunshine.

Seasonal Highlights
  • February to April: Peak visibility for whale sharks and turtle encounters; coral spawning events may occur.

  • May to July: Migratory birds and manta ray activity increase in some atolls.

  • August to October: Occasional rough seas and rainfall; fewer tourists and quieter islands.
