When to visit

December – April (Dry Season)

The dry season is best for exploring the Pacific coast, Arenal and Monteverde, with warm days and minimal rainfall. Wildlife viewing is excellent, including turtle nesting on the Caribbean coast and humpback whales offshore. This is peak travel season, with higher prices and busier national parks.

May – July (Green Season)

Early green season brings lush landscapes, fewer visitors and good value. Mornings are typically dry, with rain later in the day. This is a rewarding time for rainforest walks, river activities and turtle hatching along the Caribbean coast.

August–October (Rainy Season)

The Caribbean coast experiences its best weather, while the Pacific sees heavier rainfall. This period is ideal for birding, waterfalls and off-the-beaten-path travel. Turtle nesting continues in Tortuguero, and wildlife activity remains high.

November (Shoulder Season)

A transition month with improving conditions, fewer crowds and good availability across both coasts.

Good for: Flexible, multi-region itineraries combining beaches, rainforest and wildlife at different times of year.
