  • Entry requirements: UK passport holders require a visa for stays longer than 90 days; check the FCDO website for up-to-date advice.

When to visit

May–September

Dry season in most safari regions. Best for wildlife viewing as animals gather around waterholes. Cooler temperatures on the coast make Cape Town and Winelands pleasant for exploration.
Good for: Safari-focused trips and game photography.

October–April

Wet season inland; lush landscapes, new born wildlife, and fewer tourists. Ideal for visiting the Garden Route, KwaZulu-Natal coast, and Cape floral regions. November–March is whale-watching season along the southern and western coasts.
Good for: Scenic drives, whale watching, and avoiding peak safari crowds.

Year-round

South Africa’s diverse climate allows multi-centre itineraries combining safari, beaches, and city culture at any time, though peak summer (December–January) sees higher prices and more visitors.
Good for: Flexible, multi-region travel with a mix of experiences.
